Mental Wellness and Self-Care Training for First Responders

Terminal Objectives: The Mental Wellness and Self-Care Training course is designed to provide and prepare rst responders for the mental and psychological trauma associated with the profession.  The student will have the ability to identify useful stress management and coping skills. First hand and third party trauma can be attributed to PTSD and the many stressors and discarded emotional downfalls, and addressing this issue is long overdue. Our first responders are not prepared to take on the many psychological challenges they daily encounter. Therefore it is essential to provide them with some general knowledge associated with mental disorders, stressors, and trauma. This training will focus on self-care, which involves identifying those organizational and personal stressors, warning signs, and other red flags associated with mental health disorders.  Additionally, this training will focus on self-resiliency and the development of protective factors and a social support system. The student will understand and identify the warning signs related to suicide and suicide resources, define and identify protective factors, and recognize the need to include family in this self-care.

Enabling Performance Objectives:  

  • (EPO#1) The student will be able to identify specific warning signs and pre-indicators associated with trauma.
  • (EPO#2) The student will have the ability to recognize symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depression Disorder.
  • (EPO#3) The student will have the ability to identify those risk factors associated with trauma.
  • (EPO#4) The student will be able to identify personal stressors and organizational stressors. The student will know about useful stress management and coping skills.
  • (EPO#5) The student will have the ability to identify protective/social support factors and resiliency needed to cope with PTSD and Major Depressive Disorder.
